RN Application Asks for References? Here's Who You Should Ask

Hiring a new RN is a very big deal, so employers want to be sure they’re making the right choice. Checking references is typically a huge part of this, because no one can speak to your work better than those who know you professionally.

You’re currently in the process of filling out a nursing job application, but you’re a bit stumped on who should serve as your references. Of course, your friends and family would give you a glowing recommendation, but as noted above, you need to focus only on people in your professional life.

The references you choose can make or break your chances of getting this RN job, so only ask people who genuinely like you, who can speak to your work.

3 Best References for Your RN Application

Supervisors

A former manager is a fantastic reference, because they’re able to verify your nursing skills and experience. Since they’ve served as your supervisor, they can provide in-depth insights on everything from challenges you’ve overcome to what it’s like to manage you. Being on good terms with a former manager will also look great to a potential employer, because it shows you ended your employment on good terms.

Colleagues

People you worked with at former jobs — i.e., fellow nurses, doctors, administrators — can be great references, because they’ve been on a care team with you. They’re able to explain what that’s like — i.e., maybe you have a knack for relating to difficult patients or are always willing to pick up an extra shift — which is important to potential employers. Gaining this inside information will help them feel more comfortable hiring you, because it allows them to know what kind of nurse you are.

Professors

If you’re a recent graduate, including a professor — especially a clinical instructor — you worked closely with at school on your reference list can help your chances of getting hired. They’ll be able to verify the information you learned on their watch and explain what kind of student you were — i.e., never late to class — which can help potential employers realize they’d be foolish to pass you up.
